21 Apr Dave Hakkens’ Edible Pens- Chew, Write, and Do It Again!
In honor of Earth Day and the impending Easter Holiday, I thought a post on Dave Hakkens’ edible pens would be quite apropos. Dave has certainly brought back my childhood memories with this invention that’s both environmentally-friendly, and right in line with this season’s sugary obsession.
In the spirit of candy necklaces, he’s designed a pen that’s made of 22 edible pieces, and filled with edible ink (but you can’t eat the point). Now as a kid I loved candy necklaces. Not only could I eat them, but I could wear them too! And on some fashionable occasions, you may have even caught me sporting a matching bracelet too!
Initially created because he wanted to “chew on my pen without making it dirty,” his ultimate goal soon became to create “a pen where you can chew on and entirely eat.”
Now, I’m not one for chewing on my pens. I actually think it’s pretty gross myself. I instead manage to satisfy my oral fixations and periods of extended contemplation with gum, preferably Extra’s Mint Chocolate Chip. But I digress.
Eventually, Dave took his idea and created three molds, and began tasting various formulas for his pen until voila, a peppermint-flavored, edible pen was born.
Now Dave’s pens also come in: Mixed Candy, Orange, Watermelon, Banana, and Kiwi. Unfortunately, they aren’t available for sale yet…not yet anyway. But hopefully, Dave’s handiwork will soon be discovered and brought to the masses. I think the concept is quite novel, and I’m certain there’s a market for it- especially amongst children.
